Captain’s Log – Day 832: Editing (part1), you are DOOMED without editing, as I found out!

What you have written may be good, but not the best. But what happens if, what you right is not the best in terms of grammar, syntax and other writing parameters. Well you are doomed as I was… I knew it was editing was important, but it turned out to be the most important thing for me.

I thought i got a good plot, but i had no structure

I thought i got the structure then right, but then was shown the errors

I thought i cleared the errors, and then i was shown more errors.

By hits and trials i reached this stage, the manuscript at 101,700 words now and I would not reached here if it was not for the following activities

(1) Basic Editing – taking care of basic grammar

(2) Developmental Editing –  feedback – rework – feedback – rework

(3) Copy Editing

(4) Proof Reading

(5) Galley Reading

In total i spent closed to Rs. 200,000/- in the editing process, which in hindsight i have mixed experience. Will spend another 50K more to get a final guest editor to go through with impartial eyes for ther review and corrections. I will not say i was ill-advised, but rather not experienced. I did go in circles, but now I know the steps to be taken.

I will elaborate on details around editing in the next few posts!

Publishing Agencies – Sent to three other agencies in the last 24 hours.

Captain’s Log – Day 831: Two out of four publishing agencies contacted reading MS now

Its three days since the last post. Highlights:

  • Words down to 101,828 – that’s 10,518 words less from the original finished final draft (so-called)
  • Four publishers were mailed the synopsis and customized proposal: 1 rejection in 3 hours mentioning that it does not fit their publishing schedule, 2 of them requested for the completed manuscript in a day and 1 still awaiting a mail back
  • 6 other publishers format prepared to be sent out soon – to much busy… busy chal raha hai (update on that later)
  • Received feedback on my short – story on the short-fiction writing course attended. Some changes to be done there…. feedback was to short 😦 – either its good or its tooooo bad 🙂
  • Discussed/Mailed to a editor, who should do the final editing/proofreading. She is a author herself  and a great inspiration. Hope she keeps patience with me on my delays (her name later)

Today I will be going out to take to do a photo shoot for the book cover. Also details to the illustrators to be sent, and the final illustration will make the book look cracker jacker. Lot of things to close down. Wish I had help!!!

Logging off for now. Moving the bathing area now to get cleaned up…
