When you see a movie and it make you reflect on the character, plot and references in the story; then the movie is worth it. Airlift is one such movie. The movie begins to show punjabipan and no nonsense character of business man Ranjit Katyal. He knows how to do business, and all change when Iraq invades Kuwait. He watches his driver die shot by an Iraqi solider and then he involves himself in getting the Indians united and ensuring their survival by coming together – aka Ek Chidiya Anek Chidiya.

Airlift_poster.jpg (249×360)Ok, now back to the review. Mr. Katyal (a Punjabi) contacts Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi without much help, but only one person in the department helps and tries to tie things together – a Mr. Kohli (another Punjabi). Now you getting the gist? If this was a true story, then when not take real names and if you do not want to take real names then keep it as close to the character. Yes suspension of disbelief is there in movies, but not if the claim is on research and based on true events.

The evacuation is done, and Vande Matram is played with the Indian flag been raised in background. Happy Republic day to all. The movie plot moved seamlessly with good balance on acting and less hamming.

All happy. Almost.

Why Racist: Why is that stereo typical to show Punjabi as savior, when the real hard work was done by Mallu Christian (Mathunny Mathews). In the current storyline there is there a Mr. John, an irritating character who was getting into the nerve of the protagonist and even the audience. If they reversed the names, what would be the reaction? Mathunny Mathews (popularly known as Toyota Sunny), Harbajan Singh Vedi and others who were based in Kuwait were the ones who participated in help the Ministry of external affairs.

My experience of Ministry of External Affairs has been good, and when I had an issue in a foreign African land, they stepped in. I was apprehensive, but my father advised and we walked inside the Embassy and was treated with respect and dignity. So again type casting against that nothing works in the government.

These type casting can create issues at a subconscious level where perceptions can be built.

MILE Factor: Message, Intangible, Lesson-Learning & Entertainment

  • Identity is the core for help – first human, and then nation. When in trouble your identity is what which can help you. Knowing and holding each other’s hand is India’s strength. Our diversity is what makes us strong.
  • World’s biggest civil operation evacuation rescue effort was by India. It holds the Guinness world record, and it was done in 1990 with over 488 flights over a period of 63 days. The rescue number – 111,711 members. That was the strength then – imagine 25 years alter what we Hindustanis can do if we walk together

Pointers:

  • As of Feb 5th – Airlift which was made on budget of INR 30 Crores, have done 6.5 times of business almost ~195 crores. And scored well with critics also. SRK are you listening.
  • The Iraqi WAR FRAUD: Many stories of the atrocities of was done. The incubator story was also false: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PPiadun9Jo
  • The Nayirah testimony was a false testimony given before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus on October 10, 1990 by a 15-year-old girl who provided only her first name, Nayirah. The testimony was widely publicized, and was cited numerous times by United States senators and President George H.W. Bush in their rationale to back Kuwait in the Gulf War.
  • And then it was drop of weapons of mass destruction which was never found. Amen!

Satyameva Jayate: 1st Show Report – Intelligently Done.

Just finished watching Amir TV show…. Satyamev Jayate.  We knew he would be different, and we knew it would be a talk show and someone even said it would be like Oprah Winfrey. We it is still that… but it is Indian in heart.

The first show as about female feticide aka abortion. The show started with a couple of interviews of victims, and it was heart wrenching to hear it. In my mind, it came why doesn’t he speak about Punjab (great Punjabis), as the biggest sex ratio difference is there. And guess what… it came up.

Then I remembered a movie, Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women (2003), in which it was shown that there will come a time when there will be no women left in country if abortion continue.  In that movie a single lady is married off to a group of men who are brothers, and in the first night the father have sex with the lady. It was a nerve wracking movie. And poof… Amir showed a village where the sex-ratio is so screwed, that the men don’t get any female to get married.  And later told about location where woman are bought and sold for marriage.

The show had multiple elements to engage the social media generation on. It was nice to keep having a live interaction in SmJ (SatyaMev Jayate), FB page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Baramulla-Bomber/134048753296487#!/SatyamevJayate

My thoughts… we should have a show on Dowry and Big Marriages…. almost all of us are guilty of that. One reason people want boy is due to dowry reasons. Those who give dowry, take dowry, attend big marriages and want to have a big ceremony our self are guilty.

May be men (not boys), should take a vow not to take dowry and tell their parents that it is time!

And now for the cause:
Do you want the Rajasthan government to set up a fast track court to process female foeticide cases?”
Pledge your support to this cause by SMSing Y to 5782711

I eagerly look forward to the next show. I may be travelling out of the country for sometime, I need to find out ways where I can watch the missed show.

If Oprah had a ‘O’ in end of her show, Amir has an ‘a’ at the end. And this ‘a’, I hope is beginning of we the common people asking questions on ourselves. The more question we ask ourselves, the answers will be needed. None of us are bad inside, but the surrounding forces us to take decision, which we would not have done. Its time to stand up and be counted…. Lets all of us keeping asking questions and keep following up for the answers.

Other shows: Kashmir, Naxalite, Religion conversions. Leave no one now Mr. Khan. I am joining soon 😉

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara… Thank You Javed Sahib

Three weeks, I have been avoiding the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , but your thanks to your poetry and the three protagonists it feels nice to be re-booted again till the next setback!

I was thinking that it’s the same old wine in the new bottle, the wine been Dil Chahta Hai  (2001), Rock On (2008)…and I was right. But the fact is at each point when these two movies released I (and all of us) are at different points in our life, struggling against something. Some message may strike you when you watch some movie – showcasing friendship and bonding.

But janta forget it does strike us again and again. Right from Dosti (1964) the classic film with a classic song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7UK80PQkoo&feature=related) on friendship and even now…proves one thing. Man is a SOCIAL ANIMAL J . Individuality does give us a drive for purpose, but it is family and friends which gives an identity.  Now think of your best two friends and where there are now.

Coming back to the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara three protagonist each with a background story, dilemma, fear and a choice in the future. Life is about choices and each one will decide how the future will shape. Yes the movie was shot in Spain with well to do background, but emotions to not lie. The poetry of Javed Sahib defined each section.

While HRK was lost in work and chase for fame and money, Farhaan was like boy refusing to grow up and comic reader and finally A.Deol the balanced and practical guy also had a weak spot. Each one of us may fall in some section of this in some part of our life. We need to grow up, be sure of our choices and see life is more than money.

And before I forget…Katrina Kaif – way to go girl, if you want it go get it (the new confident Indian woman)

The Gems (Poetry): taken from : http://www.indicine.com/movies/bollywood/zindagi-na-milegi-dobara-poems/

Poem 1: Life is Short and You Need to Believe you Exist to Enjoy It!
Ik baat honton tak hai jo aayi nahin
Bas ankhon say hai jhaankti
Tumse kabhi, mujhse kabhi
Kuch lafz hain woh maangti
Jinko pehanke honton tak aa jaaye woh
Aawaaz ki baahon mein baahein daalke ithlaye woh
Lekin jo yeh ik baat hai
Ahsas hi ahsas hai

Khushboo si hai jaise hawa mein tairti
Khushboo jo be-aawaaz hai
Jiska pata tumko bhi hai
Jiski khabar mujhko bhi hai
Duniya se bhi chupta nahin
Yeh jaane kaisa raaz hai

Poem 2: Expression is Essence of Life, otherwise the question of What If will Always Remain!
Jab jab dard ka baadal chaya
Jab ghum ka saya lehraya
Jab aansoo palkon tak aya
Jab yeh tanha dil ghabraya

Humne dil ko yeh samjhaya
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai
Duniya mein yunhi hota hai

Yeh jo gehre sannate hain
Waqt ne sabko hi baante hain
Thoda ghum hai sabka qissa
Thodi dhoop hai sabka hissa
Aankh teri bekaar hi nam hai
Har pal ek naya mausam hai
Kyun tu aise pal khota hai
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai

Poem 3 Forget the Past, Pain is Eternal
Pighle neelam sa behta ye sama,
neeli neeli si khamoshiyan,
na kahin hai zameen na kahin aasmaan,
sarsaraati hui tehniyaan pattiyaan,
keh raheen hai bas ek tum ho yahan,
bas main hoon,
meri saansein hain aur meri dhadkanein,
aisi gehraiyaan, aisi tanhaiyaan,
aur main… sirf main.
Apne hone par mujhko yakeen aa gaya.

Poem 4 – For the Future…You Need to be Alive
Dilon me tum apni betabiyan leke chal rahe ho,to zinda ho tum
Nazar me khwaabon ki bijliyan leke chal rahe ho,to zinda ho tum
Hwa ke jhokon ke jaise aazad rehno sekho
Tum ek dariya ke jaise lehron mein behna sekho
Hr ek lamhe se tum milo khole apni baahein
Hr ek pal ek nya sama dekhe nigahein
Jo apni ankhon mein hairanian leke chal rahe ho,to zinda ho tum
Dilon mein tum apni betabian leke chal rahe ho,to zinda ho tum

I wonder what Khan would say now on not having lyrics or words in song…or something in a similar nature. Poetry and songs are power expression, the soul… thank god for Urdu, hearing such poem makes us feel alive again.
